Where to stay in Lisbon
The city's best neighbourhoods and hotels
Lisbon is having a moment, and it’s not hard to see why. From charming cobbled streets to lively squares, the city has a lot to love (if you don’t mind walking up a hill or two). Every neighbourhood offers something different and there are more hotels than ever to choose from, so finding the perfect place to stay can be tricky, but we’re here to help. From the bustling heart of Chiado to the bohemian spirit of Bairro Alto, we’re breaking down Lisbon’s neighbourhoods and the lovely luxury hotels you’ll find there.
Chiado
Chiado is for those who love being right in the heart of things. The Ivens, Autograph Collection, draws inspiration from the adventures of 19th-century explorers Ivens and Capelo. Its Italian restaurant, Ristorante, is always buzzing, and the seafood-focused crudo bar is fantastic. Just around the corner, Pousada de Lisboa on Praça do Comércio blends cultural heritage with modern comforts, offering views of the Tagus River and rooms that were once the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It’s like stepping into a piece of history (with WiFi and room service, that is).
Bairro Alto
Bairro Alto is where Lisbon’s bohemian spirit shines. The Bairro Alto Hotel, fresh from a major renovation, has 87 rooms and a rooftop terrace with stunning city views. Located on Praça de Camões, it’s close to the famous nightlife and artsy vibe of the neighbourhood. Enjoy prawn rissoles at the BAHR restaurant or cocktails at the secret sixth-floor bar where you’ll feel like a Lisbon insider. For a more elegant stay, check out Verride Palácio Santa Catarina, a former 18th-century count’s home. This palatial hotel, perched on the Santa Catarina hilltop, has intricate design details and breathtaking rooftop views. Nearby, you’ll find the Pharmacy Museum and the historic Bica tram.
Principe Real
Príncipe Real is one of Lisbon's loveliest districts, where faded palaces mix with trendy restaurants and concept stores overlook palm-filled parks. Memmo Principe Real captures this blend of old and new with contemporary elegance rooted in Portuguese heritage. It’s located near the Botanical Garden of Lisbon and a short stroll from the Igreja de São Roque church. The hotel's heated pool, Café Principe Real with panoramic city views, and complimentary walking tour make it an ideal base for exploring the neighbourhood’s many charms.
Avenida da Liberdade
If shopping is on the agenda, Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade on the boutique-lined Avenida da Liberdade is the place to be. This hotel exudes classic sophistication, combining French elegance with local charm. The rooms are spacious and quiet, a surprising retreat from the bustling avenue below. Meanwhile, the Valverde Hotel, also on Avenida da Liberdade, offers a warm, residential atmosphere with contemporary art and modern furnishings. Its Pateo area is a green oasis perfect for afternoon tea or evening cocktails.
Eduardo VII Park
For old-world luxury, the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon near Eduardo VII Park is all about grandeur. Inside you’ll find Louis XVI-meets-Art Deco interiors and top-of-their-class amenities, including a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and a rooftop running track. The Michelin-starred Cura restaurant and the Nikkei-inspired O Japonês offer some of the city’s best dining experiences. Just next door, the InterContinental Lisbon offers elegant accommodations and breathtaking views of Eduardo VII Park and Lisbon’s terracotta rooftops. Its welcoming lobby, charming staff, and standout Akla Restaurant make it a perfect choice for a quieter stay outside of Lisbon’s touristy centre.
Belem
In the historic Belem district, the Hyatt Regency Lisbon offers contemporary luxury with stunning views of the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge. The hotel has a chic rooftop bar and a serene spa, perfect for unwinding after visiting the nearby Monastery of Jerónimos and the Tower of Belém. The neighbourhood is even the birthplace of Portugal's most famous sweet treat, the pastel de nata. For a regal stay, head down to Pestana Palace, a restored 19th-century estate with lush gardens and opulent suites, just a short drive from the city centre.
