Where to stay in Thailand
Incredible hotels across the cities, jungles and islands
From Bangkok’s buzzing streets to Phuket’s pristine beaches, we’ve crisscrossed Thailand to track down the best places to stay. We’ve eaten our way through plates of Pad Thai, watched sunsets from infinity pools and tested our fair share of cocktails (all in the name of research, of course). The result? A hand-picked list of hotels that are worth every baht. If you’re heading to Thailand and want somewhere incredible to sleep, start here.
Bangkok
Bangkok is a full-blown sensory overload (in the best way possible). One moment, you’re dodging tuk-tuks and inhaling the scent of sizzling street food, the next, you’re marvelling at golden temple spires. The food is legendary – smoky satay skewers, spicy noodle dishes that’ll have you sweating, and cocktails crafted by bartenders who take their shakers very seriously. Whether you’re here for the temples, the shopping or the sheer madness of it all, Bangkok keeps you on your toes.
The Siam feels like stepping into a time machine, packed with antiques, Art Deco touches and even a traditional tattoo studio for those who like their souvenirs permanent. If Michelin-starred dining and a private plunge pool sound like your thing, Capella Bangkok is a solid choice. The Mandarin Oriental is all about old-school elegance, with a guest list that’s basically a who’s who of the last century. Over at the Four Seasons, you get sprawling riverside views, a multi-tiered pool and a cocktail bar so good it would be rude to turn down a second round.
Phuket
Phuket isn’t just about beaches – although, let’s be honest, the beaches are ridiculous. But there’s more. The old town is a colourful throwback to the island’s tin-mining days, lined with candy-coloured mansions and charming shophouses. Markets buzz with the scent of fresh seafood and sizzling satay, while the jungle-covered hills and waterfalls make it clear Phuket isn’t just about lounging in the sun. Island hopping is a must, and if you don’t eat your weight in Pad Thai, you’re doing it wrong.
Trisara is the kind of place where you arrive and instantly forget what day it is – private beach, infinity pools, and a team that somehow anticipates what you want before you do. Over at Rosewood Phuket, you’ve got lush gardens, plunge pools in every villa, and a kids’ club that actually sounds fun (for the kids, not you). The Surin sits on the same legendary beach as the Amanpuri, with beachfront cottages and a Thai restaurant that’ll ruin you for all others.
Krabi
Krabi is the stuff of travel posters – limestone cliffs towering over turquoise waters, beaches so white they look airbrushed and longtail boats zipping across the sea like something from a Bond film. Railay Beach is the headliner, but there are plenty of other gems tucked away, including bat caves and rock-climbing spots with views that make the sweat worthwhile. There are no cars here, just jungle paths, monkeys swinging through the trees and some of the prettiest sunsets in the country.
Rayavadee is what happens when a jungle and a luxury resort get together – pavilions hidden among the trees, three beaches to pick from and monkeys acting like they own the place. Pimalai Resort & Spa on Koh Lanta is a proper retreat, with beachfront villas, a dive centre for underwater explorers and infinity pools that make it dangerously easy to cancel all other plans.
Koh Samui
Koh Samui is where beach days roll into cocktail-fuelled nights, and there’s always something going on. You’ll find everything from high-end spas and yoga retreats to lively night markets and full moon parties. It’s an island that knows how to have a good time, but if you’d rather just lounge in a hammock and ignore your emails, there are plenty of quiet spots for that too.
Banyan Tree Samui is the definition of a secluded retreat, with villas in the hills overlooking a private bay – basically, your own little slice of paradise. Six Senses Samui goes all in on wellness, with spa treatments, jungle vibes, and a restaurant that takes fine dining to new heights (literally, the views are wild). If you want to leave feeling relaxed and refreshed, either of these will do the trick.
Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is where Thailand slows things down. It’s surrounded by mountains, packed with ancient temples and has a café culture that could give Melbourne a run for its money. The night markets are a food lover’s dream, offering everything from spicy curries to deep-fried insects. Whether you’re temple-hopping, exploring waterfalls or just soaking up the city’s creative energy, Chiang Mai is the kind of place that sneaks up on you – and suddenly, you’re extending your stay.
The Four Seasons Chiang Mai is all about the Northern Thai countryside experience, with rice paddies, gorgeous mountain views and superb spa. Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai sits at the foot of Doi Suthep Mountain, offering stylish suites, a poolside spa and a bar that’s just as good for an afternoon coffee as it is for an evening cocktail. Whichever you pick, you’re in for a treat.
