What to expect during a stay at Kimpton Los Monteros Marbella
Little Emperors’ Head of Marketing, Emma Clark, experiences this newly opened hotel
Kimpton have taken over the well-known Los Monteros Hotel after years of being closed, and I’m confident this will be the place to be in Marbella this summer.
The original building has been modernised and restored, and you instantly feel the Kimpton atmosphere the moment you walk into the lobby. It opens out onto a peaceful courtyard and bar area, where an enthusiastic barman is ready to make you your own bespoke cocktail depending on what you feel like. No fuss – just say the word and he’ll make it happen.
The pool is definitely the heart of the hotel, with its vibrant orange sun beds and yellow parasols, surrounded by immaculate gardens and swaying palm trees. It’s the kind of place that feels effortlessly upbeat without trying too hard, ideal whether you’re here for a full week or a sunny afternoon with a book and a drink in hand.
There’s a variety of room categories, so there’s something for everyone, but all are light and spacious with pops of colour in every corner. Balconies overlook either the gardens, the pool or the sea, so whichever way you face, you're in luck.
They’ve managed to keep many of the staff from the original hotel, and this really came across in their passionate service. The head gardener has worked here for over 27 years, and it shows – the grounds are immaculate. I also met a very friendly chef at breakfast who can quickly whip up whatever eggs or pancakes you like. He was especially proud of his famous Spanish omelette, and rightly so – it was delicious.
Restaurant Jara offers a proper Spanish culinary experience, led by chef José Carlos García. Everything I tried was excellent, especially the lobster ravioli. For something lighter, Rachel’s Eco Love café serves healthy options throughout the day and was already buzzing with locals and padel players when I dropped in.
One of the highlights is the Escondido Rooftop. It has a fun Californian vibe with a DJ, an infinity pool and some brilliant views of the Mediterranean. Mexican sharing plates and cocktails are the name of the game up here. It’s lively, sociable and very easy to settle into. It’s definitely worth booking ahead if you’re planning to go at sunset.
With La Cabane by Dolce & Gabbana beach club just a 10-minute walk away and the Racket Club offering padel and tennis right next to the hotel, there’s plenty to do nearby. You’ve also got long beach walks, golf and the nearby Old Town to explore, all within easy reach.
Note: The spa and gym had just opened when I visited, so I didn’t get a chance to try them. A kids’ club is also in the works and expected to launch early summer.
