What to expect during a stay at Grand Hotel Son Net, Mallorca

A 17th-century estate in the Tramuntana Mountains.

I recently had the chance to spend a weekend at Grand Hotel Son Net, and it was nothing short of magical. This stunning 17th-century estate, tucked away in Mallorca’s Tramuntana Mountains, feels like a place where history and luxury meet in the most unexpected ways. Son Net started its life as a palacio in 1672 before opening as a hotel in 1998, and now it’s been beautifully reimagined by art historian, antiques collector and interior designer Lorenzo Castillo. With 31 uniquely decorated rooms, filled with antiques and one-of-a-kind details, every corner of this hotel tells a story. Here’s what you can expect if you’re planning a stay.

Accommodation

After a quick 25-minute drive from Palma, we arrived at the gorgeous 17th-century estate in the Tramuntana Mountains. The first thing we did after checking in was head to the terrace, where we were welcomed with a drink. Sitting there with a view of the swimming pool and the rolling hills was the perfect start to our stay – the kind of moment that makes you forget the world for a bit.

We were lucky enough to be upgraded to the Grand Suite Maria de Nápoles, and wow, what a room. The suite felt like it was straight out of a historical drama with its original 17th-century frescoes, antique rugs and a majestic four-poster bed. The bathroom is more like a luxury lounge, with a massive tub and plush chairs. The suite was enormous, with two balconies offering more stunning views of the pool.

What to do

The Spa at Grand Hotel Son Net

After settling in, we checked out the hotel’s newly opened spa. The spa featured a dark, candlelit plunge pool that created a peaceful, ethereal atmosphere. The treatment rooms were bright and inviting, though I didn’t get to try any treatments this time. The spa also had a modern gym with all the equipment you could need to keep up with your fitness routine.

The next morning, after a leisurely breakfast, we took a stroll down to the village of Puigpunyent, a charming little spot that’s perfect for a morning walk. We then spent the afternoon by the pool, sunbathing and enjoying a light lunch. The pool area is so inviting that you’ll find it hard to leave.

Dining

The food at Grand Hotel Son Net was a real treat. On our first night, we dined at the Green Bar on the terrace, where we watched the sunset while sipping on a bottle of local red wine (it’s from a nearby vineyard that you can visit if you’re up for a tour). We started with Gilda – a delicious snack of anchovies, olives and peppers on a stick – followed by Pan Con Tomate and a Caprese salad.

The next morning, we enjoyed an à la carte breakfast on the terrace of Mari Deux, with a delicious spread of seasonal fruit, pastries, eggs, and fresh grapefruit juice. For lunch, we kept it light with another Caprese salad, some chips and a beer while relaxing by the pool. On our final night, we returned to the Green Bar for another helping of Gilda (we couldn’t resist!) and indulged in burgers that were cooked to perfection. We finished the evening with fresh mint tea inside the Green Bar, a perfect end to a perfect stay.
