Hotel de Rome, a Rocco Forte Hotel
Berlin, Germany
The former headquarters of the Dresden Bank, built in the 19th century, Hotel de Rome on Berlin’s Bebelplatz in Mitte has been brought up to date with a neon birdcage in the lobby, a hipster-standard cocktail terrace on the roof and an indoor pool in what was once the jewel vault. In the historic suites, set in the bank director’s office, you can see the original wardrobes, wood-panelling and coffered ceilings – and even some shrapnel from World War II.
