The Dewberry Charleston

Charleston, United States

The Dewberry Hotel offers 155 rooms and suites within the recently renovated and repurposed mid-century modern former L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building. The Dewberry’s ideal downtown location overlooks Marion Square on Charleston’s historic peninsula, affording its guests easy entry to discover Charleston’s charm. The Dewberry Hotel, both inside and out, is truly a manifestation of John Dewberry’s vision of Southern Reimagined. During Mr. Dewberry’s eight years of creating The Dewberry, architects and designers aplenty collaborated with him to bring his vision to fruition. Charleston architect, Reggie Gibson’s, decorative metal works adorn The Dewberry’s entry canopy, ballroom roof and rooftop wellness space. Charleston Preservation Designer, Cameron Schwabenton, was an early contributor and her vision is still on display in our luxurious marbled and brass fixtured bathrooms. Landscape architect, DesignWorks, led by Harvard educated principals, Scott Parker and Christophe Drumain, bought into Mr. Dewberry’s vision for simplistic elegance, befitting the building’s sixties era origin. We trust once you enjoy The Dewberry’s lush surroundings and particularly Mr. Dewberry’s re-creation of a walled Charleston garden you too will appreciate the juxtaposition of past with present. Mr. Dewberry’s vision to limewash the Federal Buildings less than flattering original red brick, with a fabulous secret recipe grey limewash mixed and applied by local artisans, David Hueske and Bernard Kruseman Aretz, boldly accentuate the buildings vintage marble, while holding true to the buildings original architecturally appealing brick Flemish bond. Two Manhattan, New York based firms BOLD and Franklyn provided their considerable talent lighting and branding The Dewberry, respectfully. McMillan Pazdan Smith round out the architectural team. All are to be applauded. Finally, while all above were indeed valuable contributors, the principal design of The Dewberry, including the lobby floor, common areas, restaurant venues, event spaces and guest rooms, involved a tight knit collaboration by Brooklyn, New York’s Workstead Studio and Dewberry’s own in-house design team, StudioDew led by John Dewberry, Lockie Brown and Jaimie Brown. Workstead and Dewberry cleverly combined time tested materials of the South with a nod to the hotels mid-century modern origin. Clean lines are flawlessly softened by elegant finishes of cherry, mahogany, oak and walnut woods, travertine and Danby Vermont marble. Hand crafted custom, as well as curated period furnishings, lush fabrics and brass details abide seamlessly providing The Dewberry an immediate world-class, timeless presence.
